Dux Central: 'A love letter to Dux de Lux'

'Acclaimed New Zealand songwriter Jordan Luck recalls creating the video for the Dance Exponents song Victoria – recorded in1984 and still regarded as one of the nation's most treasured tunes of all time - at the Dux de Lux.

In white hat and scarf, Christchurch character Al Park, of Louis and the Hotsticks, played the role of the pimp and Michelle Robinson starred as Vicky in the classic music video. Many key scenes were filmed at the Dux de Lux, located at the Arts Centre near Hagley Park.'

Dux De Lux was a significant landmark in our nations hospitality and live music history, which unfortunately all came crashing down with the 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

After tirelessly searching for that perfect space for the soon to be Dux, Dux Central was established in 2015 and quickly became Christchurch’s favourite local. Being spoilt for choice with four unique spaces, along with its gastropub menu and impressive selection of brews, it is certainly the closest replication of our OG Dux De Lux.

Dux Dine - 'A Glimpse of the Past'

View of 28 Riccarton Road, taken from a dehydration works chimney - Credits to Christchurch Star archive & Christchurch City Libraries

Behold the Dux Dine Villa, circa 1940. Once standing as home to the Station Masters of Riccarton Railroad, the villa nestled beside the railway lines in the rustic North Riccarton. Station Masters posted in the villa were responsible for the safety and efficiency of the Riccarton Railway Station.

When Dux De Lux was damaged irreparably by the 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes, Founder, Richard Sinke set out to continue the spirit of the beloved community treasure. The selection of the old villa on 28 Riccarton Road was driven by the assortment of delightful spaces and inviting comfortable atmosphere.

Musician Profile

Caitlin Bradley (CAITLIN) is an emerging songwriter in indie-pop music scene, known for her sonic and lyrical maturity, infectious energy, and her ability to win over audiences with captivating performances.

Caitlin has a great sense of representing emotion and stories sonically, working closely with her producers. Her musical maturity is especially showcased in her latest release ‘Light Leak’, with sounds that allude to production styles of Ethan Gruska and Bon Iver. Produced by Will McGillivray (Goodwill, Nomad), ‘Light Leak’ has become a fan-favourite with her most vulnerable lyrics, intimate vocals, and sensitively crafted production yet. The indie folk-pop tune carries strong lyrical and melodic songwriting that stands as a strong contender in her genre.
